After last summer’s exceptionally dry conditions, this cool, wet spring has been a welcome change on the farm. Eight weeks of drought and extreme heat left our fields parched, with the soil struggling to hold onto what little moisture remained.
Over the winter, steady snowfall quietly began restoring the moisture. Now, warmer temperatures and spring rains have melted that snow, helping to recharge our aquifers and bring balance back to the soil. The fields are beginning to turn green as April showers have woken up the perennials and kickstarted seed germination.
Muddy boots and delayed fieldwork can test our patience, but this moisture is exactly what we need for a strong growing season. Healthy water reserves lead to stronger crops, more resilient soil, and better conditions for everything we plant in the months ahead.
April showers may slow us down, but they’re doing important work beneath the surface. And with a bit of luck, they’ll bring the May flowers, and vegetables we have been waiting for.
