It is mid-August and the halfway point of the English pea harvest at Lennox Farm. If ever there was a vegetable to celebrate, it’s the humble pea. Sweet, tender, and bursting with flavour, they’re one of summer’s simplest pleasures. 2025 just so happens to be the official Year of the Pea designated by The National Garden Bureau. Peas are not only delicious and nutritious, but they also give back to the planet by capturing nitrogen from the air and creating fertilizer, boosting the soil and plants around them.
There are numerous pea varieties, but they can generally be categorized into three main types: shelling peas (also known as English pod peas), snow peas, and snap peas. Within these types, there are many different varieties, each with its own unique characteristics. At Lennox Farm, we grow approximately 60 acres of English pod peas from July through September. Each day, our crew of 15 to 16 people hand-pick, grade, and pack up to 5000 lbs of English peas. These peas are sold directly on the farm and at many local markets and grocery stores in the GTA.
Peas make a delicious snack. They can be eaten fresh from the field and have high levels of protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Our peas are known for their big green pods and delicious, sweet berries. Whether you toss them into a salad, blitz them into a vibrant soup, or enjoy them steamed, these little green gems are as versatile as they are delicious. And the best bit? They travel only a matter of metres from field to farm store, so you’re getting them as fresh as nature intended.
So, here’s to peas, small but mighty, and the taste of summertime at its best. Stop in at the market and taste the harvest for yourself!
